MLK Elementary School goes without water Friday

Posted: Updated:

The Montgomery Public School System says students at Martin Luther King Elementary School were transported to other schools for a short period Friday because there was no water at the facility.

MPS spokesman Tom Salter said school leaders were told that the water issue, due to a water main break, would be corrected by 9 a.m. but that did not happen. Salter said MPS was told the issue was worse than originally though, and so other measures were put in place.

While students were provided breakfast and lunch, school officials decided to transport some students to two other area schools so they could have access to water and restrooms.

Salter said no mass notification was issued because students were being cared for, but he did say parents of children with special needs were called directly. Salter said any parent wanting to pick up their child was free to do so and will receive an excused absence as a result.

School was not dismissed early and all students were brought back to MLK Elementary for regular dismissal.

MPS said questions about the water main break would have to be directed to the Montgomery Water Board. WSFA 12 News has contacted the Water Works and will update this story as more information becomes available.
