LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

School budgets are tight these days. When cuts are made, arts programs are usually the first to go. But a group in Lawrence County is keeping arts alive with a big donation.

A donation of $20,000 from the group will go for art courses for county students. Guitar, drama and graphic design classes are now offered after school and for credit.

"It's just great to have the arts council and the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival to support us in that, because it couldn't happen. For us to be able to find a way that we can do this in the afternoon in the evenings and then have the financial support of the arts council is tremendous," said Superintendent Heath Grimes.

"We're just blessed and we're glad that we can give back to the school system and make things happen for these kids," said Kathy Graham with the Lawrence County Arts Council.

The art classes filled up quick.  They began this week and will continue through the end of the year.
