Teen who killed 8-year-old boy gets life in prison with no parole

ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

A man who pleaded guilty in the 2010 murder of an 8-year-old has been sentenced to life in prison with no parole.

A sentencing hearing happened Thursday in St. Francisville for Trevor Reese. Reese dropped his insanity defense and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March.  He was 16 at the time of the murder.

Reese, now 20 years old, admitted to killing Jackson Attuso of Clinton in a West Feliciana Parish subdivision on June 10, 2010. The little boy's throat was slashed.

In 2012, the US Supreme Court ruled having juvenile defendants serve a mandatory life sentence for committing a crime of murder was a stiff penalty.

So Thursday, Judge William Carmichael was to rule whether Trevor Reese, who was 16 at the time he killed 8-year-old Jackson Attuso, would be eligible for parole or face life in prison.

After hours of testimony, the judge ruled Reese will spend the rest of his life in prison.

In 2010, Reese nearly decapitated 8-year-old Jackson Attuso who was riding bikes with his family. Reese took the stand Thursday and said he chose Jackson because he was weaker than he was.

A psychiatrist treating Reese testified that at the time, Reese who is exceptionally bright, identified himself with a character on the Showtime TV series Dexter. Reese thought he was a serial killer and spoke of killing again.

He said Trevor told him "when innocent people die they go to heaven. What's the big deal? He would have died anyway; maybe in a car accident."

That doctor says over the years Reese hasn't spoke of that - but another doctor testified that because of Reese's predatory killing, he is characterized as the worst type of murderer. Attorneys for both sides say both families will live with this forever.

The Grandfather of little Jack Attuso read an impact statement in which he told Reese he wants him to remember the face of the little boy he killed and said "I want you to see it every night. This is the curse I put on you."

Reese has been held in the West Feliciana Parish Prison since his arrest on the day of the murder.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
