NEW MARKET, AL (WAFF) -

Fire damaged a New Market church late Wednesday night.

The fire started in the old sanctuary at Locust Grove Baptist Church on County Lake Road. Firefighters said when they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the bell tower and roof.

No one was hurt.

The fire marshal said that on Saturday, lightning struck a tree near the church, and since then the church has had electrical problems. The fire marshal said this may have sparked the fire in a florescent cross that hung on the bell tower, but that has not been confirmed as the cause.

The tower suffered some damage, but there was no damage inside the building.

Three volunteer firefighter units responded and put the fire out quickly.
