HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A new report shows a majority of Alabama high school graduates are not ready for college. The state's students are not standing out well against the rest of the country, and among minorities, the numbers are downright distressing.

Alabama students' average ACT scores ranks 35th in the country. That average is on par with students in Colorado and South Carolina. The ACT broke down the number of students that are reaching college benchmarks by race. Alabama's African-American and Hispanic students' scores are dramatically lower than white and Asian students.

The percentage of Alabama students reaching benchmarks in English was the highest of the four tested areas; however twice as many white and Asian students reach the benchmark compared to African-American students. In Reading, the ACT said less than one out of every five of Alabama's African-American students hit the mark.

In Math, only one out of ten African-American students is at the college-ready level. Hispanic and white students did slightly better, and Alabama's Asian students scored the highest. In Science, only nine percent of Alabama's African-American students reached the benchmark.

The national average ACT score was slightly under 21.
