HOLLYWOOD, AL (WAFF) -

Puppies rescued from a dog-fighting operation will be available for adoption.

A Jackson County judge signed an order Tuesday allowing five pit bull puppies to be placed with new owners.

"There will be a process that the people have to go through which will include like a small background check and an application process so we can determine that they're not going to be used for fighting and the dogs are going to be in a safe home, " said Hollywood Police Chief Jason Hepler.

There are five adult dogs which were also rescued last March from a dog-fighting operation in the Jackson County town. Hepler said the adult dogs will be sent to a canine rescue center. The Scottsboro Animal Shelter is in charge of the adoptions.

The chief said three people were arrested on dog-fighting charges; one has pleaded guilty.
