HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Huntsville School Board will consider a new flexibility waiver at the next board meeting. Superintendent Casey Wardynski introduced a waiver that would give teachers in "failing" schools the option of passing on tenure in exchange for a yearly bonus. That bonus would be no less than $2,500.

"We are looking at offering our teachers compensation if they wish to release their tenure rights under the Students First Act," said Wardynski.

The waiver would be the third one introduced as part of the Accountability Act. The state already approved the option for teachers and administrators to be certified after the state cutoff date on October 1st.

Superintendent Wardynski said those waivers help in the situation where someone may quit or be fired in the middle of the school year.

The new waiver will be voted on at the next board meeting, then head to the state for final approval. There's no word when the waiver would go into effect if passed.

The next school board meeting is September 5.
