The UPS Foundation recently presented the Alabama Wildlife Federation with a $10,000 check in support of the organizations conservation education activities at the Alabama Nature Center.  As a Conservation Education Partner, the UPS grant will be used to directly assist with connecting youth and school group attendees with the outdoors through Alabama Nature Center programs such as Lanark Field Days and monthly weekend events for the general public.

A non-profit organization, the Alabama Wildlife Federation utilizes the Alabama Nature Center to provide real-world outdoor experiences that foster an understanding and appreciation of the woods, waters, and wildlife found in Alabama and the role that each of us play in the wise use, management, and protection of those resources.

"Our education activities connect Alabama's young people, and adults, to the outdoors through a variety of unique educational and recreational opportunities. This grant represents an investment in that effort," said Tim L. Gothard, AWF Executive Director. "We are extremely thankful for this tremendous gift from The UPS Foundation. It will help us continue to have a positive impact on people and our natural resources."

Daniel Blanton, Karen Sturm, Dean Lambert, Stan Kania, Byron Franklin and Walt Lynch recently joined Gothard, AWF staff members, and Expedition Lanark campers at the Alabama Nature Center in Millbrook to celebrate. "It's very important for us at UPS to give back locally, get involved in our communities, and invest in Alabama's children. We are grateful for the opportunity to help students enjoy such an amazing resource, stated Dean Lambert, UPS Facility Engineering Manager."

Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA., The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: nonprofit effectiveness, encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability.

In 2011, The UPS Foundation distributed more than $45.3 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as the Alabama Nature Center and provide support for building stronger communities.

"The UPS Foundation is honored to support the Alabama Wildlife Federation's efforts to educate our children and adults about the wonders of Alabama's outdoors," said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. "Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community."

The Alabama Nature Center, a hands-on outdoor education facility located at Lanark in Millbrook, Alabama, is a joint project of the Alabama Wildlife Federation and benefactors Isabel and Wiley Hill. The Lanark property, State Headquarters for the Alabama Wildlife Federation, contains 350 acres of striking forests, fields, streams, wetlands and ponds that are traversed by five miles of trails and boardwalks including a tree top viewing platform. The Alabama Nature Center hosts a variety of outdoor education programs including Lanark Field Days events for youth and school groups, Expedition Lanark Summer Day Camp for children aged  5 – 15, and monthly weekend events for the general public.
