MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

History in the making as the Montgomery Public School system opened its first new high school in roughly 50 years.

Park Crossing High welcomed more than 400 9th and 10th graders.

"I am one happy parent...yes!" shouts Kindra Newell as her daughter walks into Park Crossing High School.

There are plenty of reasons she is rejoicing.

"No more breakfast! No more sleeping in!"

Newell was ready for her daughter to get back in the classroom.

"Make smart choices, go to school, someone else's problem during the day."

The allure of this new school has Newell anxious for new programs and opportunities offered here.

"They're really gonna pull them. So I'm waiting to see how well they do. And I hope they give a LOT of homework because I'm one of them homework parents."

The school boasts innovative classrooms and common areas, state of the art storm shelters and technology courses.

"It's like a mini-college campus. It's really nice. I love it," says freshman Justice Bush.

She understands how rare her first day really is.

"I feel really lucky to know that I get to go to a brand-new high school and one of the best out here."

Parents do too.

"I graduated from the last high school that was built in Montgomery, Jeff Davis High School, and I think it's neat that my son gets to graduate from the newest high school built," says parent, Willie Durham.
