UNA practice report Friday

After watching his players go through the third day of preseason practice, University of North Alabama Head Football Coach Bobby Wallace said he was pleased with how physical the 2013 Lions are.

"I thought our contact periods were much more physical than they were last year and that's very pleasing," Wallace said. "You can contribute that to the fact that our guys are a year older, they had a good off-season strength and conditioning program and the maturity level is a lot higher. You can tell there aren't as many young guys out there as last year."

Wallace said a couple of players caught his attention during the Friday session, redshirt freshman quarterback Jacob Tucker of Linden, Tenn., and senior linebacker Gabe Poe of Pheba, Miss.

"Jacob had a heck of morning," Wallace said. "And you couldn't help but notice Gabe on defense," Wallace added. "He is so productive. He is around the ball on every running play and was getting his hands on passes on the passing plays."

Poe was an All-GSC linebacker at West Alabama in 2011 before receiving his college degree and spending a year in the work force. But with a year of eligibility remaining, he made the decision to return to the gridiron and join the Lions while pursuing a Master's degree. He was selected as a pre-season All-Gulf South Conference pick by the league's head coaches. Wallace said the Lions are still putting in new stuff every day.

"Our new guys heads are spinning a little bit but our older guys are really doing well with their assignments," he said.

The Lions will practice at 9:00 a.m. Saturday before putting on the pads for the first time in a 3 p.m. practice session Sunday.
