HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Last year, Huntsville City Schools became the largest school system in the country to toss their textbooks for technology. Students and teachers were issued laptops to use for the digital switch. It was an adjustment for everyone involved, and it starts all over again Monday morning, when students head back to the classroom.

Stephanie Hyatt is an Advanced Placement English teacher at Lee High School. She said the adjustment came with its complications.

"It was a little scary at first because you have to figure out how you are going to make that work," she said. "It's a huge shift in your teaching. You have to figure out what you are going to do next. There were some real hiccups with the internet and getting students on the internet.  Their textbooks are on the internet, so you have to figure out how to work that out. I have to give major kudos to our IT department."

Leanne Perry works in the Information Technology call center. She said calls have already been coming in from parents and teachers needing help and that old issues like bandwidth and internet connections have been fixed.

"They've done studies to find out where it's weak and where it's needed," she said. "So we won't face those challenges of last year."

Hyatt expects the 2014 school year to be free of technology trouble.

"This year we are pros," she said. "Last year we were trying to figure out what to do with this stuff. We had all of these new toys and we didn't know how to make them not be toys but to be true work courses for our kids. Now we know."

The call center is open from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to answer questions.  If you need assistance with your child's school-issued laptop, call 256-428-6900.
