Reduced hours for proposed Guntersville entertainment district

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A final proposal is ready to be sent to the Guntersville City Council as they prepare to vote on establishing an entertainment district. The district runs between the alleyways of Gunter and Blount Avenue from the river bridge to Worth Street.

A committee met and recommended the days at times of operation be shortened. Instead of six days a week, Guntersville's entertainment district would only be open for three days. Mayor Leigh Dollar said part of the last city council meeting was about taking feedback from the citizens. After taking that feedback into consideration, she hopes the changes are agreeable to most residents.

The city council will soon have another chance to vote on an entertainment district, but it will only be operation on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Pending approval, Mayor Dollar said the district would operate between 5 and 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 2:30 to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

There were requests that the former Glover Restaurant, located past Worth Street, be included but it was not in the compromise ordinance proposal.

The mayor feels the new district will be a boost for Downtown. "We've had some local concerts on Tuesday nights this summer, and they seem to draw a lot of people, so we're hoping that people will see that as an opportunity," Dollar said.

The Guntersville City Council is expected to vote at their next meeting, Monday night at 6 p.m.
