Andalusia ready for Babe Ruth World Series 2013

ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) -

For the third time in recent years the city of Andalusia has held a grip on the Babe Ruth World Series.

"We typically have the tournament in smaller cities because that way the world series doesn't get lost in the bigger cities with everything else going on," said tournament director Bob Dickson.

Colin Mason wouldn't have it any other way. Mason plays for the team from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the New England regional champion.

"It's the southern hospitality and we like it here," said Mason.

There are 10 teams with around 140 players from all over the country. In fact, some families spent as much as $5,000 to make the trip to Andalusia. Becki Deaton cheered on her son, a pitcher on the team from Columbia Basin, Washington. Columbia Basin is some 2,800 miles away.

"It is absolutely worth it! This is a once in a lifetime deal and we're proud to be here," said Deaton.

One player struck out, another drilled a shot up the middle on day two in the game between Massachusetts and Washington. Away from the action at Wallace Community College hotels and restaurants in Andalusia are hitting homeruns thanks to the tournament.

The tournament continues well into next week with the championship game set for 6 pm next Thursday.

"I know yesterday on day one we were 13% higher than the same day last year. We're doing a lot of catering," said David's Catfish floor manager Crystal Knowles.

The community came up with $45,000 to bring the Babe Ruth World Series to Covington County and each time the locals have stepped up to the plate, according to Dickson.

"This field is nice and so is the facility," said Dickson.

Even in the heart of football country these folks are serious about their Babe Ruth series.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
