FALKVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If you're an athlete, there aren't many prouder moments than when you slip a state championship ring on your finger.

The 1-A state track champions at Falkville High School have to wait a little bit longer to have that feeling. Their championship rings were on the UPS cargo plane that crashed near the Birmingham airport on Wednesday.

"They were so upset about the rings because we were waiting to get them, and we've been waiting for so long," said assistant coach and former Falkville track champion Dylan Kyle. "And it just happened to be that one plane, and our rings were on it. Yeah, they were pretty upset."

However, Head Coach Keith Wilemon said the team understands the situation and is being patient.

A total of 36 rings were ordered. Four arrived in an earlier shipment, but the majority went down with the plane. Wilemon said the ring company has placed another order, and the new rings should be in next week.

He said right now the team's thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two who died.

"Two people just lost their lives, they can't be replaced," said Wilemon. "The phone call we got was certainly not as devastating as the phone call that those two families got."
