Shoals fire departments need volunteers

Posted: Updated:

Volunteer firefighters in the Shoals are in need of community assistance to help keep their stations afloat.

They're searching for volunteers willing to commit time and service into their communities.

The fire departments are looking for help across the board. They need volunteers for everything, from cleaning the station, answering phones, and of course people to run emergency calls.

"There is a great need for volunteers," said Adam McCanless with the Lauderdale County Volunteer Firefighters Association. "It seems we're not getting as many coming out wanting to volunteer as we used to."

McCanless knows first hand the struggles of operating a volunteer fire department. Without the volunteers, the departments would cease to exist.

"We need volunteers in every aspect, in every capacity, not just running into burning buildings," he said. "We need them here helping to answer the phones, wash the trucks, sweep the bays, helping with fish fry or other fundraisers."

The need for volunteers is a growing battle among departments everywhere. Kelly Aday sees it every day in Colbert County.

"With us being volunteers, we all have full time jobs so it's important to get more people involved to help take some of the workload of the volunteer department off of us," he said.

Both men agree any assistance community members can give to their local fire departments will not go unnoticed.

"We can use people that can give one hour, we can use people that can give 15 to 20 hours," said McCanless. "There's jobs for everyone to do, not everyone is capable of fighting fires but there's other jobs around the station that need to be done."

To volunteer, call Lauderdale County Volunteer Firefighters Assoc. President, Adam McCanless at 256.810.6785 or Colbert County Volunteer Firefighters Assoc. President, Kelly Aday 256.710.1901.
