Huntsville Area Crime Stoppers wins national awards

When we say that Huntsville Area Crime Stoppers works, we mean it, and others are taking notice.

In fact, the program, of which WAFF is media sponsor, has won awards at the international, national and state levels. We are proud to say we have added to that list.

Huntsville Area Crime Stoppers has now won "Best Public Service Announcement" and "Best TV-Crime of the Week" in the country for our market size at the Crime Stoppers USA Conference going on in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Huntsville Area Crime Stoppers coordinator, Officer Nathan Nickelson is attending that conference and said, "This is absolutely a team effort with our media partner and local law enforcement. And of course, we couldn't do it without the community."

This conference isn't just about awards. It's also about crime. There are seminars and people discussing crime trends and also crime fighting techniques. Some of those techniques work, some don't. We're seeing how we stack up.

The crime trends do differ a bit depending on the size and location of the city.

"They're having problems with more of the homicides, the rapes, the robberies than we have in the southeast," Nickelson said. "We may have a lot of burglaries and breaking-and-entering into vehicles. But up here, they have more of a major crime problem."

Regardless of the crime, the crime-fighting tools have never been better. That's thanks to the ever-expanding social media, which Huntsville continues to take advantage of.

"We look at the trends and that gives us the ability to network and say this is what we're doing in North Alabama and it's absolutely working. And everyone is saying here: Huntsville is doing something right," said Nickelson.

But you still have to have people willing to step forward with those tips, and that's something Nickelson says the folks here in North Alabama have always been willing to do.

And the rest of the country is taking notice.

Nickelson said, "When we walked away with those awards, I probably had 17 to 20 different programs around the country wanting to sidebar with me."
