2 members of Union Springs Country Club arrested on harassment charge

Posted: Updated:
UNION SPRINGS, AL (WSFA) -

There are new developments today in the harassment claim against the Union Springs Country Club. Union Springs police formally arrested two members of the club. Investigators say Richard Chapman and Joe Varner turned themselves in Tuesday afternoon to the Union Springs Police Department. Chief Clarence Wheeler says the men face one count each of harassment.

WSFA 12 News broke the story late last week.

Corpage Robinson filed a police report against Chapman and Varner. Mr. Robionson is black. In that report Robinson alleges the two men harassed him while he was using the country club's parking lot as a turn-a-round to get back on the main road. The Union Springs Country Club is a private membership club.

Robinson says he had his wife and infant son in the vehicle when he noticed 'two white males' in a golf cart come off the golf course and 'verbally abused' him. Robinson says he was in the process of giving his wife a tour of his hometown. Robinson claims he saw one of the men pull out a gun but made it clear that man did not point the weapon at him. Robinson also claims the two suspects followed him to the police department.

Two country club board members initially tried to get WSFA 12 News to not air the story because they didn't 'want any bad or good publicity.' WSFA 12 News reporter Bryan Henry declined their requests. Those two board members later told Henry the 'club denies any wrongdoing.'

One of the two men in the cart told WSFA it was Robinson, not them who copped an attitude and started cursing. The club also added 'it has the right to question non-members coming through.' Club members say they've had recent golf cart thefts but do not believe Robinson is the culprit.

Court records show Chapman and Varner have a court appearance in Bullock County on September 4th. The harassment charge is a misdemeanor.
