US Postal Service: White substance at AL AG's office not harmful

Officials with the United States Postal Service says that the white powdery substance found in an envelope at the offices of Alabama's Attorney General is non-toxic.

The letter, which was address to the Attorney General, was opened in the reception area of the AG's office on Washington Avenue Wednesday morning.

Local, state, and federal first responders immediately evacuated the building and started an investigation to identify the substance.

Eight people were in the vicinity of the power and though to be exposed were kept inside the building until it could be determined they were not contaminated. They were taken to a decontamination tent where they were scrubbed clean.

Initial tests by the U.S. Postal Service found the substance to be non-toxic. After it was removed from the office, authorities with the Alabama National Guard Civil Support Team performed more tests confirming the powder was not harmful.

"Our employees are all safe, and for that I am most thankful," said AG Strange. "The Attorney General's Office is working with state and federal authorities to investigate the source of the letter received today. I want to commend the first responders, firefighters, medics and law enforcement personnel for their rapid response, assistance and professionalism."

Authorities have not said what the exact substance is, nor have they provided details about where the letter came from or who sent it.

"The actions performed by the federal, state, and local first responders is a prime example of how working together as a team makes a more effective and efficient government," said Secretary Spencer Collier of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency,  " I would like to commend the City of Montgomery's Fire Department for the exemplary efforts today."

An investigation is being conducted by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
