A new phone scam is targeting furloughed workers. The caller claims to be with the government and tells them that since they are on furlough, they have been selected to receive a $9,000 grant.

The caller then asks for a credit card number or bank account number for the funds to be deposited.

"No one from the government is going to call you on the phone and say you have been selected for money if you haven't applied for the funds and then ask for your bank account number. And then the thing here is the reason for the furloughs is to cut the government's budget, so it doesn't make sense that they would offer money to those who have been furloughed," said Michele Mason with the Madison County Better Business Bureau.

The calls originate from a 202 area code and so far the only victims have been in the state of Georgia. If you receive a similar call, Mason says ask the caller what agency they are with. Look up that agency and call them and ask if they recently called you with such an offer.
