Governor Bentley has awarded grants under the Weatherization assistance program. Select low-income and elderly Alabama residents who need assistance reducing their utility bills will get help from these grants that total $950,000 state wide. The grants will go to contractors to improve the energy efficiency and safety of homes that qualify. Common improvements include installing extra insulation in the attic, walls and floor; sealing air leaks around doors and windows; repairs or tune-ups for air conditioning and units; and replacing incandescent light bulbs with high-efficiency compact fluorescent's. In addition to lowering energy bills, the improvements can reduce the risk of fire and other hazards. Huntsville Utilities are also willing to work with those struggling with payments.
