Donations slow for Accountability Act scholarships

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Donations have been slow in the initial days since the scholarship program of the Alabama Accountability Act has been online.

"We didn't know what to expect" said Curtis Stewart, a Deputy Commissioner within the Alabama Department of Revenue.

Since August 1, the day the scholarship program donation portal went online, $109,000 has been donated to the five scholarship granting organizations.

The Department of Revenue will provide credits for all donations up to $25 million.

Individuals and families could donate up to $7,500, while corporations are essentially unlimited in their possible donations. The limit for corporations is up to 50% of the company's taxable Alabama income.

Stewart with the Department of Revenue said, "No one has come in with a significant amount of money to exhaust the $25 million yet. That may happen that may not happen. We just don't know when people will make donations and how much."
