ABI returns to deputy-involved shooting scene

Posted: Updated:
LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

ABI agents continued investigating a deputy-involved shooting that took place over the weekend in Lauderdale County.

Courthouse officials said that the original call came in as shots fired on Saturday night. Officials said that when deputies arrived on scene, neighbors who called for help were hiding in fear, saying their neighbor, Mitchell Campbell, was shooting towards their home.

Deputies heard threats from across the field and decided to approach. While walking, officials said the three deputies and one reserve officer heard an estimated ten shots from the home.

Officials said as deputies approached the home, they identified themselves and saw Campbell put a gun down on the porch and walk towards a small gate. The senior officer said he identified himself and approached Campbell. That's when officials said Campbell grabbed a rifle and pointed it at the deputy. The deputy fired three shots, and Campbell died from those wounds.
