DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Sheriff of DeKalb County wants to educate his citizens about new changes to gun laws.

With a new law making it easier to get a gun in Alabama, many sheriffs' departments are seeing an increase in young people wanting guns.

In the past, sheriffs could ignore a pistol permit application if they determined someone was too immature to get one. That has changed under the new law that took effect August 1. Now, a sheriffs'' department has to make a written report that will stand up in court explaining why an application was turned down.

The number of 18-to-20 year olds seeking a gun permit is going up. Because of that law, sheriffs are holding classes to educate their citizens about how that will affect them.

DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris is holding a new gun law class for business owners, land owners and law enforcement officers Monday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tom Beville Center.
