HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Before students head back to school, parents need to make sure their kids' vaccinations are up to date.

This year, state requirements call for all students to have at least one chicken pox vaccine. Students entering sixth through ninth grades need an updated T-DAP booster shot. They will also need a new Blue Card to start school. It is also necessary for students entering the Alabama school system for the first time to have updated vaccines and records.

For those in need of updated shot records and Blue Cards, the Madison County Health Department will be operating special immunization clinics this week as well as Monday, August 19 (the first day of school) and Tuesday, August 20.

Patients will be signed in between 8:30 and 11 a.m., and again from 1 until 3:30 p.m. Parents will need to bring each child's shot record or a copy of their most recent Blue Card.

These shots are free, but the Health Department recommends you bring your insurance card if available for possible state reimbursement.

The Health Department is located at 301 Max Luther Drive in Huntsville.
