HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Huntsville Police are searching for a man that shot two people at a West Huntsville apartment complex.
Police said 22-year-old Charlie Dupree Harris and 31-year-old Genoris Smith were shot multiple times in their vehicle on the 4500 block of Bonnell Drive just after 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Harris and Smith were transported to Huntsville Hospital where they were being treated for serious injuries. The victims told police that one man approached them in their car, and then stole cash and other property from the car after shooting them.
The victims were able to crawl out from the car while the suspect fled on foot. Harris collapsed at a nearby apartment while Smith tried to get inside a church.
Witnesses on the scene reported hearing four shots.
"It was back-to-back, but it wasn't real fast," said witness Darius Malone. "I didn't know what was for real. I know some people are doing some work around here on apartments. I thought maybe it was a tool or equipment making some loud noise or whatever."
A mail carrier was caught in the middle of the shooting. He said he was putting mail in slots when the victim stumbled over and left blood on the mail truck.
The pastor at the church reported that his doors were locked. "We have to lockdown at a time like this because we have a daycare," said Pastor T.C. Johnson. "We have a lot of children we have to ensure are cared for. The young man could not just run into the church."
K-9 units were brought to the scene. No arrests have been made at this time.
The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, you are asked to call the Huntsville Police Department.
