Contact Kim: Free gas... for a price

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A viewer received an offer in the mail that seemed too good to be true. It turns out that it was, and came with a few strings attached. She needed clarification, so she turned to me. Around the same time, the BBB reached out to me, telling me they have seen this before.

A viewer emailed me at Contact Kim about a letter she received in the mail from Clearwater, Florida. The letter informed her that she was eligible for $100 in free gasoline. She called the 1-800 number and was instructed to pay a $3.95 fee with a credit card in order to claim the $100 in free gas.

Fearing it was a scam, she contacted me. I took her concerns to Michele Mason at the BBB, who says they have seen variations of this particular scenario before. In addition to offers of a gas card, some people have been notified they have won $100 gift cards to Walmart or grocery coupons. She says it is usually a promotion to get you to join a membership club.

You can visit the BBB of North Alabama's website, where you can check out a company's rating and complaint history.
