Perjury indictment for accused Lauderdale Co. killer

Posted: Updated:
LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Lauderdale County grand jury indicted Shannon Johnson on first degree perjury Wednesday.

Earlier this year, a Lauderdale County jury convicted Alfred Shawn Johnson of murder. Johnson and his brother Shannon are accused of brutally beating Keith Barnett back in 2000 and leaving him for dead near the Tennessee state line.

Back in March, WAFF 48 asked Shannon Johnson about the murder and why he lied. "We did not kill Keith Barnett. I don't even know Keith Barnett. I was scared," he said.

Originally, Shannon Johnson was charged with murder but plead guilty to manslaughter in exchange for testimony against his brother. However once the trial started, Shannon changed his story, saying he lied under oath and refused to testify.

The perjury charge carries a potential one-to-ten year sentence if convicted. His arraignment date has been set for September 10.
