A jury found J.C. Samuels guilty of murdering his son Thursday.

J.C. Samuels was charged in September 2009 with the murder of his son, Greg Samuels, who died from a single 22-caliber gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard of their Robert Circle home.

Attorneys for the defense said the younger Samuels had made numerous threats against his father to "bash his head in," even hitting J.C. hard enough to knock him off a tractor nearly a month before.

Prosecutors said Samuels had a choice while his son had gone to the store for beer. He could have left or called police, but instead, he lay in wait with a loaded rifle until his son got back, and then shot him.

The jury went out just before 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon and the verdict was read just before 4:30 p.m.

Greg's sister, Jennifer Lafferty-Fisher, offered a few words after the verdict. "Rest in peace," she said, "We've got the kids. Everything is going to be okay."

Samuels will be sentenced on September 23. His post-trial bond has been raised to $100,000.
