DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

It's a freak accident that spread quickly to boaters on the Tennessee River.

"You wouldn't think about something like that and it happened but when you are out on the water, you really need to be alert because you don't know what's out on the water or under the water around you," said boater Ricky Camp.

Crews with the Morgan County Rescue Squad are paying attention too. Chief Danny Kelso said the TVA, Coast Guard and Rescue Squad all have something in common when it comes to keeping people safe: warning lights.

"We are all providing on each side of the line using our vessels with emergency caution warning lights to slow boaters down or advice them of the situation so they can choose to go around our choose a different path or just use caution in that area," he said.

After hearing about Tuesday's tragedy where a man was killed when his boat went under a down power line, boater Matthew Jackson said he's being extra vigilant.

"It makes you keep a close lookout when you are going up and down the river," he said. "The power line did that and then you have a lot of debris and stuff that floats in the water too so you have to watch what you are doing."

In addition to that, Camp said he's taking an additional step to stay safe.

"Whoever else is in the boat helps watch out because you never know what's there and you don't want to take a chance because being on the water isn't like being on land," he said. "You have to be able to get out."

Kelso said the work on the power lines should be done in the next two days.
