Workers put positive spin on furlough Fridays

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

One group of workers has decided to put a positive spin on furlough Fridays by using what would be the eight hour work day to volunteer in the community.

The forced leave has left many employees with nothing to do for their one furlough day a week.

"You can only watch so much daytime television," Russ Wetzel, an AMRDEC Aviation engineer on Redstone Arsenal, remarked with a smile.

The group started out as a way for furloughed employees to get together and talk about things, but it soon evolved into much more. They decided to make the best of their situation and fight furlough days by giving back.

On Friday, the group headed to Huntsville's Downtown Rescue Mission to improve their bunk beds by building some ladders.

Like any good engineer, the team went armed with a prototype and a plan.

"You can take the engineer out of Redstone, but you can't take the engineer out of the engineer if I may," said Wetzel.

When all is said and done, the group will end up making 40 ladders. Beyond that though, is the sense that when furloughs finally end, something good will have come out of them.

"We'll move on to regular course and whatever the future brings, but today, we know that we have an eight hour period to make a good mark and that's what we're going to do," said Wetzel.

To volunteer, you don't have to be a furloughed employee. Everyone is welcome to come out. The group gets together every Friday at 8 a.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Madison.
