Nashville Symphony, musicians' union miss contract deadline

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

They put the sound in the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, but the next thing we hear from them might be chanting on a picket line.

At midnight, the contract between the Nashville Symphony and the Nashville Musicians Association expired without a new deal.

A representative for the symphony said Thursday they are still in negotiations with the union.

All this is framed by the symphony's recent troubles, including near bankruptcy and a threatened foreclosure sale of the famed concert hall.

About a month ago, one of the symphony's biggest supporters, Martha Ingram, stepped in with a big donation to help in negotiations with the bank.

And in the midst of all that, the musicians' union was already looking ahead to its contract talks with the symphony.

In a statement released in April, the musicians' association pointed to orchestras across the country who have been dealing with strikes and lockouts.

For now, it's not clear if Nashville's situation will come to that because both parties seem content to keep details of their discussions behind closed doors.
