MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison County Sheriff's Department is asking for a budget increase for the next fiscal year to the tune of $5 million.

The department submitted its budget on Thursday along with all other county departments and elected officials.

Sheriff Blake Dorning is asking for ten additional deputies and more patrol cars. He said the Madison deputies are paid on average $9,000 less per year than deputies in agencies similar in size.

Dorning said the extra money would get the department up to par.

"We know that there's just so much money, but we're just asking for consideration that we would receive the funding on order to retain our employees and continue to perform at the level that our public deserves," said Dorning.

Sheriff Dorning said the department realizes that is a tall request, but officials hope the commission can help them devise a plan to pay our deputies what they deserve.
