DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

TVA officials are answering questions about a transmission line that killed a fisherman on the Tennessee River in Decatur Tuesday night.

The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. The victim, 65-year-old Anthony Szozda, was killed when a TVA transmission line hit him while he was participating in a weekly fishing tournament near Ingalls Harbor. Authorities said he died of blunt head force trauma.

TVA officials said they were replacing a transmission line. The cable that secures it snapped and the line went into the river around 2:30 p.m.

TVA notified the Coast Guard and they closed the river between the Wilson and Wheeler dams, putting out a warning over marine radio. That let commercial vessels know about the transmission line, but the fishermen participating in the weekly tournament do not have marine radios.

Around 5:30 p.m. TVA workers pulled the line out of the water, at just the exact time Anthony Szozda and another man came through on their boat. TVA said they had two boats out there, but a witness said there were no boats in the area when the accident happened.

So we wanted to know, if this work was being done for three hours, why would the TVA's boats not be in the work area when they raised the transmission line?

"Those are details that we're looking into right now," said TVA Vice President of Operations, Justin Maiehofer. "We do know what happened yesterday, and now we've got to determine why."

The Alabama Marine Patrol and the Coast Guard are investigating the fatal accident.
