ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The Tennessee Valley Authority will be testing an updated emergency siren at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Wednesday.

A voice emergency notification system has been added. The TVA said it became clear that this was needed after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

When the power went out in Fukushima, many people lost access to public address systems like radios and cell phones, which caused a breakdown in communications.

The new voice system at Browns Ferry consists of battery-powered speakers that are capable of running for up to seven days. This will enable residents to get information even if their power goes out.
