HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said the city is forced to reprioritize when it comes to road work funding. He said ATRIP funding from the state will likely be shifted from smaller road projects to main roads like I-565 and Memorial Parkway.

The mayor said Huntsville was not given enough money to tackle most of what needs to be done. Huntsville is sharing $50 million with the city of Madison and Madison County.

He said it is important to put the money towards roadways that move the most traffic. Mayor Battle said roads that were once priority roads will likely be put off. That includes widening on Zierdt Road and work on Martin Road, among many others.

Decisions won't be made until after a metropolitan planning organization (MPO) vote. The mayor said he has not officially cut the Zierdt Road project, but if he has to choose, he will choose to begin work on North Memorial Parkway.

"The people who live in other areas that have to leave those areas every day, come to work, leave from work, and go back home, that is what we are looking at," said Mayor Battle. "This doesn't just affect Huntsville. It's Huntsville, Madison, Madison County and that whole 14 county area in North Alabama."

Mayor Battle said many projects have already been deferred to 2024. One of those is the widening of Hobbs Island Road. He said a total of $450 million worth of projects are delayed in Huntsville. He said it will take more money an understanding from the governor to move Huntsville in the right direction.
