2 18-year-olds, 6 juveniles arrested in connection with hundreds of car break-ins

Posted: Updated:

The Madison County Sheriff's Office arrested two 18-year-olds and took six juveniles into custody in connection with hundreds of car break-ins.

Investigators said the more than 200 thefts happened in the city of Huntsville and across Madison County in a three month period.

Sheriff's officials called it "car hopping" - when the teens would go around to unlocked vehicles and take anything of value, including electronics and weapons. At least three guns were known to be stolen and have been recovered.

All of the suspects face criminal mischief and theft of property charges.

The two adults, Trevor Jones and Brett Balch, were booked into the Metro Jail. The six juveniles were taken to the juvenile detention center.

Investigators said there could be more victims because some thefts were as small as change.
