Agencies work together to catch armed robbery suspects

GADSDEN, AL (WAFF) -

Two law enforcement agencies worked together to catch two suspects in an armed robbery.

Authorities reported Patrick Louis Ray, 19, and Derick Rayshun Williams, 26, entered the Kangaroo Express on Rainbow Drive in Gadsden early Friday morning. One suspect jumped over the counter and tried to open the cash register. The other robber stood at the door and ordered the employee to open the safe. When she couldn't, he held her at gun point and pushed her into the restroom.

A citizen waiting at a red light nearby saw Ray and Williams run into the store. She called 911 after seeing activity inside. She followed the robbers as they left the scene in a vehicle.

Etowah County Sheriff Entrekin said the citizen's detailed description helped officers quickly catch the crooks.

Gadsden police found the robbers' vehicle at Forest River Apartments less than nine minutes after the call. Sheriff Entrekin said they appreciated the teamwork, and called it an example of how quickly crimes can be solved when law enforcement agencies work together.

An investigator said the weapon and clothing used in the robbery were located in the apartment along with stolen rolled coins. $120 was taken from the store.

Ray and Williams are being held in the Etowah County Detention Center with bonds at $50,000 each.
