Sierra Club seeks to 'Save the Cumberland'

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

"Save the Cumberland" is the message kayakers are trying to send to the federal government.

The Sierra Club sent kayakers into the Cumberland River on Saturday to highlight the large amount of pollution in the river.

The group is pushing for stronger federal standards that limit toxic water pollution from coal-fired power plants.

A recent report released by a coalition for environmental and clean water group, which includes the Sierra Club, found that eight coal plants in Tennessee and nearly 400 others across the country need stronger water pollution standards.

In April, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed the first ever national standards for toxics dumped into waterways from coal plants.
