HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Due to furloughs, Redstone Arsenal is closing Gate 8 beginning Monday.

Officials said operating hours for access control gates will change to "more efficiently utilize the shrinking access control point guard force."

Starting Monday, July 29, Gate 8 at Goss/Drake Road will be closed Monday through Friday. It will remain open on weekends at regular hours.

Effective throughout the furlough period, the gate hours will be:

  • Gate 1 - 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Friday
  • Gate 3 - 5:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Thursday (Closed Friday)
  • Gate 7 - 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Thursday (Closed Friday)
  • Gate 8 - CLosed Monday-Friday, Open Saturday and Sunday 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Gate 9 - Open 24 hours, seven days a week
  • Gate 10 - 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Friday

"Budget restrictions and reduced manning authorizations have hit our access control point guard force particularly hard," said Col. Bill Marks. "As we drive on into the next fiscal year, we will be tasked to do more with less. We will continually seek improvement but it will be a difficult time."

Redstone Arsenal officials said they're closely analyzing traffic patterns and safety issues to ensure that security is maintained, employees and customers are safe and that Redstone is able to continue its mission.

"This is a very fluid situation – one that could change daily," said Marks. "We ask everyone to be patient and we will do our best to get the correct information out in a timely manner."
