Ex-PTA president accused of stealing money sentenced to 1 year

Julie Buchanan Julie Buchanan
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A former PTA president, convicted of stealing money from a fund set up for a dying boy, is going back to jail for another year.

Julie Buchanan has served 2 1/2 years in jail and another 3 1/2 years on probation, but she is now accused of violating the terms of her parole.

The terms of her sentencing restrict certain financial transactions, and Buchanan is not permitted to have a bank account or take out loans.

But she was called back to court for allegedly writing bad checks.

"The fault lies with me in that I should have called you or my probation officer and gotten a clarification on that," Buchanan said in court Wednesday.

Prosecutors say not only has she taken out three small loans - including one she gave directly to her prison cell mate, Pamela Rogers, a teacher who had served time for having sex with a student - but she also allegedly overdrafted so many times that Bank of America closed her account.

The bank closed the account in May because of insufficient funds, and in one statement period, Evans allegedly spent more than $1,000 at places like Victoria's Secret, The Cheesecake Factory, Publix and Belk at Cool Springs Galleria.

Buchanan served about 2 1/2 years of a 13-year sentence for stealing more than $100,000 from the Granberry Elementary School PTA and 9-year-old Tyler Doughtie, the little boy dying of cancer for whom the PTA was raising the money.

In a recent hearing, Buchanan said she is now a changed woman and everything is now straight with the bank.

But her documentation led to some heated words.

"I'm having a hard time accepting much of what your client is saying," Judge Mark Fishburn said.

It is a touchy subject, because Buchanan has lied before and tried to explain it from the day she was charged with embezzlement, to her trial, to her parole hearing.

Fishburn said two weeks ago he will not accept any more documents directly from Buchanan, and, Wednesday, he sentenced her to jail for her parole violation.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
