HUNTSVILLE, AL (AP) -

Cyclists and motorists coexisting safely on area roadways: that is the goal behind a new cooperative effort between the City of Huntsville and members of the local cycling community.

The "See and Be Seen" initiative is the brainchild of the Bicycle Advisory and Safety Commission. The purpose of the campaign is to increase awareness and educate both motorists and cyclists in an effort to create a more bicycle-friendly community.

"We are telling the general public to see the bikes, but we are telling the cyclist to be seen," explained spokesperson Jamie Miernik. "Wear bright colors and reflective vests, and have big, bright tail lights on your bikes. Do anything you can to be seen."

The year-long See and Be Seen campaign is funded in part by a grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation.
