AMARILLO, TX (KLTV) -

A Tyler man was killed on Thursday when his small plane crashed into a mobile home near Amarillo.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Ben Harned IV, 53, of Tyler, was piloting the plane when he began experiencing engine problems.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says in an email that the pilot reported engine problems Thursday and was attempting to return to Tradewind Airport when the plane crashed in a yard by a mobile home.

FAA online records show the plane is registered to a Hobbs, N.M., man.

Harned owned a business in Amarillo and flew back and forth.

There were no reports of injuries to people on the ground.

Police say the crash happened near a highway interchange within the Amarillo city limits.

National Transportation Safety Board and FAA investigators are headed to the scene.
