Cullman Co. Schools under fire for 'prayer caravan'

Posted: Updated:
CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

The Freedom From Religion Foundation plans to stop a prayer caravan from visiting schools in Cullman County.

The caravan will be made up of school district leaders, traveling to each school to say a 10-15 minute prayer on Saturday, August 10.

Spokespersons from the FFRF said that is inappropriate.

Cullman County Schools Superintendent Billy Coleman said the FFRF has contacted him about the prayer caravan. He said they've been doing the prayer caravan for three years without any issues.

Coleman said the caravan was announced on the school website, but it has since been taken down, and the school has no involvement in the event.

"I think the issue they have is, is it school sponsored," said Coleman. "This is not something the board voted on. It is just something I started."

Coleman compared the prayer caravan to prayer around the flagpole, saying, "It's announced, people can come voluntarily."

"I'm not ashamed one bit of it. I'm a Christian," said Coleman. "I pray for our schools every single day."

"The school system doesn't sponsor it, so they're not going to cancel it. I initiated it; I am not going to cancel it."
