Sheriff: ETX man shot, in critical condition after forcing woman to leave at gunpoint

HENDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas man is in critical condition and in the hospital, after being shot in the stomach during a confrontation with a man who is believed to be his ex-girlfriend's brother.

Authorities said James Dotson entered the residence of his former girlfriend's brother just after 2 P.M. Wednesday, threatening to kill the two, before taking the woman at gunpoint and driving away.

The Henderson County Sheriff said Dotson returned to the home multiple times, before eventually being shot by the ex-girlfriend's brother, Michael Jennings.

According to investigators, Dotrson was confronted in the front yard by Jennings, when he charged at Jennings and reached for his gun. That's when officials said Jennings shot Dotson with a short-barreled shotgun in the abdomen.

Dotson was transported to ETMC Tyler in critical condition, but faces six felony charges when released, including three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary of a habitation, unlawful restraint and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Recently, Dotson has racked up similar charges, including burglary of a habitation less than one month ago, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in December 2012. He was also charged with multiple assaults last year,

Michael Jennings was also booked Wednesday for possession of an illegal firearm.

"The shotgun barrel has got to be 18 inches or better," said Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt. "The one he had was 16 inches."

Jennings has not been charged in the shooting, however.

"We feel like it was probably self defense, but all of it will be presented to the grand jury," Nutt said.

Neither Jennings or his sister were injured.

At this time, Dotson remains at ETMC in critical condition.
