Residents want barriers near popular bridges taken down

The Limestone County Commission put up several barriers blocking access to vehicles near two popular bridges. The commission says it's because they received complaints about drunk people damaging the area. But one resident disagrees and wants the barriers gone.

Mary Hice can't get enough of the Sugar Creek and the Iron Bridges.

"We fish, we swim, we put our canoes in and take our canoes out," said Hice.

The creek is on the Limestone County and Lauderdale County border. But recent action by Limestone County to rip out the boards at the end of one of the bridges and erect a dirt mound has Hice up in arms.

"Is that dangerous for our children," said Hice. "Would you want your children to come out here and swim?"

Limestone County Commissioner Ben Harrison said the commission received complaints of people partying too much and they're just trying to keep the area clean and safe.

That's a huge liability issue for the county and it's a safety issue," said Harrison.

Hice is gathering signatures and looking for a local group to adopt the area, patch some of the holes, and make the area a historical landmark.

"If you look around you can see there's not a lot of trash, there's not a lot of graffiti and what I see is a community trying to preserve a very important part of their history," said Hice.

The commission is willing to work with Hice and other residents to find a happy medium. Hice is all ears.

"I just don't want to lose this beautiful historic landmark," said Hice.
