ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

Two people are now in custody, charged with stealing equipment used to maintain the football field at Arab High School.

School officials said one of the men was once played for the school many years ago. But what was targeted in the theft has many scratching their heads.

Jacob Morton Thompson lives a half a block from the field where he used to play. He and Bryan David Neal are charged with burglary of equipment from Arab High School.

Officials reported in June that motors and pumps from their two field laser machines had been stolen from a shed at the school. The machines are used to paint lines on the football field. Arab Police said after a month's worth of investigation, they found the equipment had been taken to a scrap yard, which led to the arrest of the two men.

While theft of such unique items doesn't happen every day, police said that the public should not be surprised. "It's so easy to steal the stuff and take it to a scrap yard and get money for it. It's not uncommon," said Chief Investigator Scotty Watson.

Both men were given $5,000 bonds, but Neal is currently held without bond due to a probation violation.
