MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A Tennessee Valley doctor and father of Discovery Middle School shooter, Hammad Memon, is out of jail after being charged with stealing from Medicaid.
Dr. Iqbal Memon was arrested at his home in Madison Wednesday morning and taken to the Metro Jail. He was charged with Medicaid theft after an investigation by the Attorney General's office.
He was bonded out of the Montgomery County Jail on Thursday.
Dr. Memon is accused of stealing more than $7,000 from the state's Medicaid agency. His arrest comes about one week before he is set to go to trial on an unrelated charge.
Memon is charged with hindering prosecution after authorities said he tried to help his son, Hammad Memon, escape the country. According to the District Attorney's office, his trial will go on as planned.
Dr. Memon is a pediatrician in Athens. The parents of several former patients of Dr. Memon reached out to us after seeing the news of his arrest.
One mother said she who brought both of her kids to him for about five years.
She said Dr. Memon was a fantastic doctor and hopes the charges aren't true. She said she never suspected him of anything like this in the years she went to his office.
"I feel bad for Dr. Memon and I almost feel like they are grasping at straws, almost putting him on a witch hunt so-to-speak, because everything that happened with his son and what he and his wife are accused of doing," said Angel Vanderford.
Dr. Memon is charged with two counts of 1st degree theft of property, a "class B" felony. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $60,000 fine for each charge.
