ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Browns Ferry officials said human error caused a reactor to shut down at the TVA plant last December.

Plant officials faced the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Wednesday in Atlanta to explain what went wrong and why. WAFF 48 was the only news outlet that attended the meeting.

TVA officials admitted that an employee failed to properly follow procedure while restoring power to a reactor, which forced it to shut down. Plant officials have since removed that employee from management and said there was no threat to workers or people living near the plant.

TVA is already under increased oversight by the NRC stemming from a 2011 violation in which a reactor emergency cooling line was blocked.

"We are certainly not happy with any sort of performance issue or deficiency like this, so that's why they came in so we could hear their perspective and completely understand everything before we can make a final decision," said NRC spokesperson Roger Hannah. "Obviously we would like to see no issues at every plant in the country, but issues do occur, and the NRC wants to make sure these issues are identified and promptly corrected."

It will be at least four weeks before we know what repercussions, if any, TVA will face over the incident.
