HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Tennessee man accused of shooting a Madison County Sheriff's deputy after a robbery and then firing at two Fayetteville, Tennessee, police officers appeared inside a courtroom Tuesday.

Joseph Shriver is charged with multiple crimes in both Alabama and Tennessee. He's been in custody since November of 2011.

"We're going to ask that Mr. Shriver be allowed to stay here for a few minutes," said one of Shriver's attorneys. "We have some video tapes that we need to show Mr. Shriver."

Shriver let his attorneys do all the talking Tuesday morning. During discussions with the Lincoln County judge the defense told the court they've struggled to find time and access to their client.

Since his arrest nearly two years ago, Shriver has stayed behind bars at Nashville's Riverbend facility. It's a maximum security prison, but don't expect Shriver to move anytime soon. The defense filed multiple motions with the court. They'll be heard at a hearing on August 6th, and another court date is already set for September.

After his legal issues are resolved in Tennessee Shriver will face additional charges in Alabama.
