Hospital wars heating up in the Shoals

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Hospital wars are heating up in the Shoals. Officials at Helen Keller Hospital are speaking out against the proposal for a new hospital in Lauderdale County and they're not backing down.

Officials at Helen Keller Hospital have filed an appeal with the Montgomery County Circuit Court. The appeal comes on the heels of the State Certificate of Need Board's decision to allow RegionalCare to build a new 280 bed hospital in Florence.

Officials at Helen Keller said they are not against a new hospital being built, but are against the number of beds it will have. They feel the new hospital should only have 233 beds, that's 47 beds short of the approved plan.

According to a statement released by Helen Keller Hospital, the appeal is based off of the recommendation from the administrative law judge and to insure healthcare services for the people of Colbert County are not threatened.

Helen Keller officials said the appeal is not preventing the start of construction of the new facility.

ECM officials said right now they are discussing the changes made to the original proposal based on the Certificate of Need Board's approval.

The changes will have to be approved from both Lauderdale County and Florence city leaders before construction can begin.
